I guess that's not nice.
But unless you have a well-frequented channel with many viewers, it won't be too hard to just link your viewers to Vimeo or your own website or something else that can also host videos.

It's what's compatible between networks. But it is now in progress of being phased out, despite the whole original promises of supporting XMPP and interoperability between networks Google made. It's very definite, for example, the support forum for talk is going down in 3 days.
This looses us interoperability between messaging services. Just think about how shit it would be if SMS or eMail split up into proprietary protocols incompatible between apps and maybe even providers...
Apart from that: rest assured, Hangouts and Mail is currently trying to fudge users on G+, too.
