Putting new components in non-modular hardware needs to become a more popular niche. Things are faster now, but build quality was unmatched as late as 20-15 years ago.

I've been waiting for the concept of Sleeper Laptops to become a thing for way too fucking long.

AV1 and the future of 4K 4chan

No.100522569 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Is there a good reason why we cannot post AV1 in WebM on 4chan boards now in 2024?

After all, a video file is just that — just a file.

The server should only deliver the given WebM and then let the client deal with the actual codec.

With AV1, for example, it becomes possible to compress unscaled 4K 2160p music videos and fit them in 4chan size limits.

One such example would be the 6MB AV1 video of https://qu.ax/GcQS.webm which is the recompression of https://youtu.be/VboS3zloKb8

(You may feel compelled to ask, “But why would you do that?”

That's just an example to demonstrate that 4K 4chan is the future.

The actual sources of the future video quotes would not necessarily all have to be music videos, that's for sure.)

A hardware decoder is not a requirement. Most web browsers use some fast software decoder (usually dav1d) that suffice.

You should be able to export AV1 video keyframes losslessly (remuxing them into AVIF files) and, vice versa, you should be able to post AVIF files in disguise of 1-frame AV1 videos in the future.

Theoretically it's even possible to export AV1 video quotes losslessly (remuxing them into animated AVIF files) without the audio.

try uploading this picture to 4chinz
https://gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=8413782
add borders, rotate and tilt it, layer it on top of another image, make it a transparent layer over another image, 4chinz botnet AI will detect and delete it before it even posts
the AI botnet isn't coming, it's already here

bloat and slowness is good. it allows you to think about what you're going to do before you do it. it is meditation. fast, "optimized" software is bad for you.

Zig

What is /g/'s opinion on Zig? Why isn't it as popular as Rust and Golang? Have you ever used it for a project of yours?
In my junior eyes it seems like a good language to learn, but then again, I am a junior so I don't really know shit
