Has anyone here applied for a patent?
I've developed (but not yet released or otherwise disclosed) some software. To implement its main feature it solves a tricky technical problem using a specific technique/"trick".
I believe my solution is novel (based on being unable to find anything else that uses the same approach), and think it may be patentable (based on the fact that much simpler and more general software patents seem to have been recently granted).
Most advice I can find says that doing it properly, with a professional patent attorney, costs at least $10k per country. Paying that upfront is completely out of the question. I'm a poorfag and don't have personal savings to invest in this. It could be an option after I start selling the software, but it looks like that would constitute disclosure and would prevent me from filing patents in most regions.
Is there any downside to trying to DIY it, which only costs a few $hundred? The worst case is the patent is refused and I'm in the same position as if I hadn't tried, right?
I'm in the UK and would be seeking at least UK+US patents.
