Ask yourself this: who is willing to spend their time and energy on maintaining and checking code for free? Not a lot of people. That means it's extremely easy for exploits to be placed in open source projects. At least with giant tech companies, they know what backdoors they place because they get PAID to maintain the code, so they can patch them up super quickly if need be. No random schmuck can contribute malicious code into proprietary software.
