>At the premiere of The Mikado on 14 March, 1885, principal soprano Leonora Braham performed the entire second act, including the notoriously challenging aria "The Sun Whose Rays Are All Ablaze" while drunk on an entire bottle of brandy and several glasses of gin. Braham, who was firmly in the grips of what we would now call PTSD following the suicide of her husband (a composer, who shot himself in front of her) had developed a dependence on alcohol to cope and to induce sleep. Despite her state of drunken despondency, she gave what is widely regarded as one of the greatest performances of her life, only collapsing after the final curtain call.
