Every musical era / genre has a truly functional main lifespan of about 70-80 years give or take. Baroque was most prevalent from about 1640 to 1730, classical from 1730 to 1800ish, romanticism from 1820 to 1900, modernism from 1900- 1950ish, blues about 1900-1950 when it was overtaken by rock, which if the pattern continues, rock's main lifeline would be 1950 to about 2020.
I'd say guitar-based rock is just about dead. Now of course, people will still play guitar rock for decades to come (just like people still play classical today,) guitar rock's dominance over the musical landscape died somewhere around 2005. The fact you even created this thread means guitar rock will never be as important again as it was between 1960 and 2000.
Interestingly enough, electronic pop started around 1970's, so that will still be pretty strong til about 2040. And hip-hop, starting from about 1980's, will very likely be the leading defining musical sound of western society (as it already kinda is becoming, for better and for worse) until about 2050.
