Carribean and Latin American countries have the best traditional folk music. So many related, but distinct varieties, complex but codified rhythmic structures and almost all with traditional dances to fit them.

It's too bad the only Latin music /mu/ ever really brings up is Brazilian. Nothing against Brazilian music but there's so many other great styles out there from Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Chile, Peru, etc.

Sublime Frequencies- Harmika Yab-Yum: Folk Sounds From Nepal
>"Harmika Yab Yum" is a divine blend of Radio excerpts and field recordings from Nepal compiled by Robert Millis. This exciting mosaic snares among other oddities, a "King Cobra" snake charmer, the sounds of slaughtering buffaloes and guns firing amidst a Durga Puja festival, dreamy folk music, Sarangi and Harmonium players seeping in from unknown radio signals, pounding drums, praying monks, child choruses, street sermons, loudspeaker promotionals, and quiet footsteps at the top of the world. Millis has produced many curious audio works as a member of the group"Climax Golden Twins" and this collection of Himalayan ephemera captures the timeless beauty of the world's highest Kingdom, land of the rhododendron, the Kumari (a "living goddess"), and the legendary "Yeti". (Recorded in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Gorkha, and other undisclosed locales in 1996)

Yeah, that's how it usually goes with these ancient music interpretations. I'm not a huge fan of them, even if they are definitely as "close as possible" to what it would've sounded like, it's still not quite there. It doesn't really tell me as much about the culture the music was written in as it does about the culture it was interpreted in, if you know what I mean.

Anyone got any Indian folk recs? Ideally Tamil or other stuff from the south, but I wouldn't object to north stuff either.

Most Indian folk people know of is made by that Indian dude who taught George Harrison how to play the sitar.

I honestly dunno much outside of that realm, mainly cause that dude's stuff overshadows everything else.

I'll have to look into folk music from Sri Lanka, i keep forgetting that place exists.

Ravi Shankar is a) not a folk musician, his training was largely classical, and b) from the North Indian tradition, which is different enough from south music that you don't hear much about him if that's what you're into.

There's enough difference between Hindustani (north classical), north folk, Carnatic (south classical), and south folk that I like to keep them in separate categories and right now I'm mostly looking for stuff in the last.

If you find any good Sri Lankan stuff though, either Sinhalese or Tamil, that'd be cool. I'm into South Asian stuff in general.

turntablism and turntable music are not the same fucking thing

also Rebab and Female Singing of Central Javanese Gamelan is highly recommended in place of Lewiston.
