>>53325536Hi Rich!
Currently listening to this. I haven't listened to any real music from the Bahamas, only Exuma, but it's quite clear where his inspiration comes from. Honestly, this music is pretty great. Very raw and powerful vocals, often with little or no accompaniment. It also helps that I can actually understand what's being sung, something that's fairly uncommon in traditional music since it's sung in the native tongue of wherever it's from. I'll make sure to read something on OxMu about Bahamas music, because I really need to learn more about it.
only /trad/ album i listened to this week so far was Ferenc Sebő's Folk Music of Lőrincréve, a collection of Transylvanian Hungarian folk songs. enjoyable, but nothing extraordinary.
>>53326819*from
>>53326819>Transylvanian Hungarian>>53326819Huh? How does this work?
>Connected artistsSo King Tubby and Ravi Shankar are /trad/ now?
>>53326891Well, the group isn't really moderated by me. Personally I would have liked to make a new group for this, but since I'm already in MOTW, might as well just use that.Or I make a new group? Would anyone care or use it? Doubtful.
>>53326640Wow, checked Grove Online, and there isn't an entry for Bahamas. This makes me a bit disappointed.Listening to volume 2 right now, and the first tracks seem to be a bit more bluesy than the first volume. I don't really mind.
>>53326851http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sz%C3%A9kelyswell, sorry for not using the correct term therei'm not exactly sure everyone who might visit this thread knows what "Székely" means though
what's some good music from modern day pakistan
>>53327106Oh I didn't mind that,I was just more interested in how music could be both Hungarian and Transylvanian at the same time. Isn't Transylvania a region of Romania?
>>53325445who's that hipster mister?
>>53327198stalin
>>53327173it is, since the 1920 Treaty of Trianon. however, a significant Hungarian minority (the Székelys) remains there to this day, still speaking a unique dialect of Hungarian and preserving a cultural (and musical) tradition distinct from both Romanian and "mainland" Hungarian folk culture.they are also one of the main driving forces of the Transylvanian aspirations of independence.
>>53325445>tfw no stalin bf to cuddle with and listen to obscure eastern Euro folk with
>>53325445What's the difference between trad and folk?
>>53325445>>53325461Actually, it's just a good photographhe was actually disfigured by acne-type scarring (conveniently invisible on this photo) and his stature was bad too
>>53327301>speaking a unique dialect of Hungarianas hungarian wasn't difficult enough already
>>53327436Trad is an abbreviation of traditional music so music which has been played over a really long time by a custom and folks are the people that play that music and most music in general. It'd be weird to have music not made by folks though I suppose whale song isn't that bad.
hello Hampi & othersso I heard some west Javan/Sundanese traditional music recently & it was goodany suggestions?
Listening to Stanley Murphy recently. He's from Ivory Coast. Can anyone rec some music from there?
>>53327769Did you listen to Sundanese Wedding Ceremony? That's the best gamelan I've heard.
>>53327951cant remember what it was called >Sundanese Wedding Ceremonyis there a particular album or recording
>>53327436The difference between irish pub music and appalachian porch music. Or more accurately, the difference between irish pub and Bob Dylan.
Any good traditional Native American?
>>53328029Yes, by Gentra Pasundan. A lot more stripped back than the gamelan I'm used to.
>>53327301Oh, that's interesting! Thanks for that information.
>>53325445https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HeZtFH1Trg
>>53327436The thing is there was once folk music (called traditional folk now) and then other genres started to be influenced by it. Music they played became a lot difrent than its roots. So there was a need to name this new genre. People that were into trad folk called it contemporary folk although this new music became a lot more popular than trad folk and most of the poeple just calles it folk now.
>>53328250
>>53328250>>53328714also this
>>53327769Smithsonian Folkways has an entire collection of CDs dedicated to Indonesia, so you might like that. A shitload of vocal and gamelan, basically.
>>53325445Loads of shares here, for anyone interested: >>/mu/thread/S53078748#p53091441
>>53326640Id say modern Bahamas music is pretty cool--that is, the stuff they sell at kitschy tourist trap stores--because it's this traditional stuff sort of distilled through a lens of implied western consumerism. Does that make sense? It's "fake," but at the same time it's grounded in a unique and harder-to-swallow /trad/ reality that still sort of shines through. It's just fascinating to me. I'll be honest, I haven't heard much genuinely traditional Bahamian music, but Ive heard a shit ton of what people THINK traditional Bahamian music is. It's an interesting descrepancy. Also, you asked for me, here I am. Hope i don't sound like an idiot.
>>53328984also, I'm the guy who uploaded a lot of that stuff. I have a bit more new stuff that I can start sharing here if ya'll want. I think 1 new Korean, maybe 2 Japanese, 1 India, and a few Indonesian albums
>>53329140post some
>>53329169Upload Indian album please>>53329183Of the modern Bahamian stuff?
>>53329169Indonesian would be good
>>53329197>Of the modern Bahamian stuff?yeah, why not?let's see how much it's influenced by traditional
>>53328714>>53328790Thanks, there was one "album" that was posted here before, it had something to do with a golden record and possibly flutes? I know it was on youtube. Here's some Shu-De for anyone looking into tibetian throat singing or just tibetian music in general. The genre is really interesting despite getting made fun of on /mu/ a lot.
>>53329267Shit, I'll see if I can find it. Didn't keep track of a lot of the artist and album names because they're pretty much a dime a dozen down there but I'll see what I can dig up. There's this one artist that sticks out to me, he had a bunch of songs with names like "sand on da booty" and shit like that. Like, "da" was actually in the name. I'll try to find him.
what the hell is the appeal of this?
>>53329400what, listening to lots of different kinds of music? fuck knows. Im going to stick to dismal & depressing indie rock & top 40 rap, not like these losers lmao
>>53329169Starting with Indonesia: French dude named Jacques Brunet went to Indonesia recorded a buncha stuff. Vinyl released in the 70s. Folders include scans and artwork.1.) Also, found that I haven't shared 2 of my Tibetan albums and 1 Vietnamese album. I'll go ahead and up those when I get the chance. >>53329197Got India up next >>53329400Interest in the music made by people from all around the world. Can gain some inspiration or knowledge from it. Music nerds like it. I mean, it's not like it's harsh noise.
>>53329400Why would you not be interested? Its not like there is only good music from a shortlist of specific countries only.
>>53329326>possibly flutesthats the only album that comes to my mind, i don't think it's what you're looking for though>Here's some Shu-De for anyone looking into tibetian throat singingthanks, will listen to it
>>53329352Haven't found exactly what I'm looking for (I'm limited to mobile right now so it's a bit difficult) but I'll post what I *have* found http://youtu.be/A3zOHHQSDNs is a good example of "stereotypically Caribbean music"And there's an album on spotify called "The Bahamas: Islands of Song" that's a bit more dignified and authentic than what I have in mind but still demonstrative of how tourism culture has affected Bahamian folk. There's an a capella cover of sloop john b on it that's pretty cool. Can't find it on YouTube and I don't have a last.fm but anyone with spotify should check it out.
>>53329579>i don't think it's what you're looking for thoughNah, but thanks anyways. The picture on youtube had a small golden record, if anyone knows of it. I'll stop asking here and go look for it now.
>>533295232.) Jacques Brunet - Java: Vocal I >Java, also gamelan with some more stuff going on. >>53329596>good example of "stereotypically Caribbean music"i can see all them tourists in the bar with their drinks listening to this, not realising how much they are overpaying and having the time of their lifes, pretty funny>The Bahamas: Islands of Songthis might actually be a lot closer to their trad music

>>53329947Cool. I'm taking a class on southeast Asian religion right now and this can only be helpful, along with being interesting.
>>53330156Re: the second one, like I said it's not exactly what I was aiming for but it's interesting in its own right. Still pretty America-flavored, but I suppose that's only to be expected.
